The effective cleaning of the media at the end of a filter run is important forthe filtration facilities of water treatment plants. Ineffective cleaning will lead to the formation of mudballs, cementation of media grains, poor filtrate quality, and high head loss build-up. The application of granular activated carbon (GAC) in the water industry is increasing to meet stringent legislation as it has a great adsorption surface to eliminate dissolved organic matter as well as the capability of odor and color removal. However, the higher rate of attrition and wash out of GAC, compared with sand, have been aconcern for practical application. This study evaluated several water backwashing regimes that would give the best cleaning of GAC, while minimizing the carry over and loss of GAC. The effects of different backwash regimes, for example water and air scour, on the attrition of GAC were also examined. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
