The N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) issue in Canada began as one of industriallycontaminated groundwater and evolved into one of NDMA formation within drinking water treatment plants. Along the way, analytical methods had to be developed and optimized to enable the detection of ng/L concentrations of NDMA to determine if drinking water had become contaminated to levels of human health significance. Through the efforts of many personnel, the number of incidents of NDMA detection and the concentrations at which it has been detected in Ontario drinking water have both decreased significantly in recent years. This paper provides a brief synopsis of Canadian events and issues pertaining to NDMA in drinking water. Includes 19 references, figures.
