This paper summarizes major findings froma complete drinking water taste and odor investigation and control study conducted at four Detroit, Michigan, water plants. The scope included taste and odor monitoring, treatment technology evaluations, and the impact of alternative treatment technologies on theexisting treatment processes, as well as the facility engineering improvement evaluations. Both powdered activated carbon (PAC) and ozone were determined to be feasible options for mitigating taste and odor problems in Detroit source water. However, the performance of PAC was greatly affected by both water quality and operation conditions. Includes 9 references, tables, references.
