The cell culture-polymerase chain reaction (CC-PCR) methodfor detecting infectious Cryptosporidium parvum is a novel technique that is currently under experimentaltrials for monitoring environmental and potable water samples. The present study describes the application of the CC-PCR method for analyzing finished water samples from 80 surface water utilities. The Finished Water Monitoring Program aims to examine 24 monthly samples from a large number of conventional surface water treatment plants to assess the adequacy of treatment to protect against infectious Cryptosporidium in drinking water.
