Source water protection is becoming an increasingly important toolfor drinking water utilities to use to meet water quality objectives, both from a regulatory perspective and a consumer perspective. Utilities need to look beyond just simple compliance with Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Consumers will not necessarily believe that drinking wateris safe based on MCL compliance during a taste and odor episode. Source water protection programs provide an alternative to additional treatment for MCL compliance. These programs also may forestall the installation of additional treatment by prevention of water quality degradation from watershed sources. This paper discusses source water assessment programs and reviews source water protection programs and legislation dealing with Cryptosporidium. Includes 15 references.
