The primary objective of this paper is to discussand present a new approach to computational or numerical optimization of membrane treatment processes from an economic standpoint. The optimizations are performed for typical ultrafiltration systems operating in time-dependent and steady state modes, and for different raw water conditions characterized by variable particle sizes and concentrations. The effects of these variations on the optimal costs and various design and operating variables are investigated. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
