Surface waters and finished waters which were collected during the InformationCollection Rule (ICR) were evaluated for viruses using the total culturable virusassay (TCVA) prescribed by the US Environmental Protection Agency and an integratedcell culture-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay (ICC-nPCR) which wasoptimized. Results of the TCVA assay indicated that less than 20% of the sourcewaters were positive for viruses while none were detected in finished waters. Results of the ICC-nPCR indicated that almost 50% of the samples were positivefor one type of virus and at least one finished water sample contained viruses.
