Most ozonation/biological processes have been applied as a single pass system inwhich ozone is applied prior to biological treatment. In such cases, some of theorganic matter that could otherwise have been degraded biologically is oxidizedby ozone, thereby increasing the ozone demand. Another disadvantage of singlepass systems is that the biologically treated water could likely be furtheroxidized by ozone, thereby reducing the concentration of biodegradable organicmatter and stabilizing the treated water. However, when the recirculation isutilized in this combined system, the retention time of the reactors decreases asthe recirculation rate increases. This would be a factor in decreasing systemefficiency. It has been well established that the combination of ozone andhydrogen peroxide (known as the Peroxone system) can enhance the hydroxyl radicalconcentration and that the hydroxyl radical can effectively oxidize naturalorganic matter (NOM) due to its nonselectivity. Therefore, it is expected thatthe retention time of the fluidized bed treatment (FBT) system can be reduced ifthe Peroxone system can remove some portion of the NOM that can be removedbiologically. Thus, Peroxone is an alternative to ozone in recirculatingozone/FBT systems. Ozonation and Peroxone in combination with biologicalfluidized bed treatment was investigated for the removal of trihalomethane (THM)precursors in this study. The system was operated both with and withoutrecirculation. Includes 6 references, figures.
