The City of Dayton, Ohio reached an agreement with the Ohio EPA to conduct full scale microbial challenge studies at two water treatment plants. Both plants are classified as groundwater under the direct influence of surface water. A study was performed at the Miami Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in October 2000. The microbial surrogates selected for the challenge study were heterotrophic plate count (bacteria), endospores and particle counts. Grab sampling was conducted every 2 hours over a 10 day period. In-line measurements for the studied filter effluent were also recorded for turbidity and particle counts. Results from the Miami WTP study indicated greater than 2-log removal at the 95th percentile for all three parameters. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
