This paper describes an investigation of the adsorption characteristics of HAA5 by ZJ15 activated carbon, including full-scale application of the design parameters from the research. It was found that the Langmuir isotherm equation was the most suitable equation to depict the adsorption results with a correlation coefficient of more than 95%. The resulting adsorption isotherm equations for multi-adsorbate conditions were determined to be: DCAA: qe=2000¿0.059Ce/(1+0.059), TCAA: qe=5000¿0.154Ce/(1+0.154Ce), MBAA: qe=1429¿0.064Ce/(1+0.064Ce), DBAA: qe=10000¿0.001Ce/(1+0.001Ce). The isotherm equation for MCAA is not reported here because the correlation coefficient was less than 60%. Reasons for differences in the adsorption characteristics of haloacetic acids under different conditions and their respective capacities are proposed. In column test, the MTZ was observed to be established after one hour and, in this study, its thickness was found to be 20 cm. ZJ15 activated carbon was found to be very effective in removing HAA5, with an estimated 3 year regeneration time under conventional full-scale operating conditions. Design and operational parameters for this GAC for HAA5 removal are provided. Includes 14 references, figures.
