This study evaluates microsand-ballasted coagulation-sedimentation and microsand-assisted oxidation adsorption processes for arsenic removal. Both the microsand based processes were effective in removing arsenic to less than 10 ppb concentration. High removals of arsenic for relatively low coagulant dosages were recorded for these microsand based processes. Ferric chloride was found to be a better coagulant than polyaluminum chloride for arsenic removal using microsand based processes. Characteristics of residuals and costs for implementation will determine the applicability of these innovative technologies for arsenic removal in the long run. Includes tables, figures.
