The candidate contaminant list (CCL) is one of the processes used by the industry to develop and determine the contaminants that will be regulated in the future. The current list includes 50 chemical and 10 microbial contaminants. Most of these contaminants, if regulated, will not have a significant impact on treatment or system operations. However, a trend for additional organics and pathogen treatment has been established by the CCL and by other groups that are assessing the need for additional public health protection and regulations (e.g., DBP Council). This trend may have some significant impacts on the industry, especially treatment. Although the trends towards addition organics and pathogen removal are not new, the impacts may be greater as new requirements surpass the capabilities of current conventional treatment systems. Future treatment will most probably have to include additional organics removal with technologies such as biological filtration, granular activated carbon, ion exchange, or membranes and additional pathogen removal with site specific improvements in disinfection with combinations of chlorine, ozone, UV, chlorine dioxide and chloramines. Includes 5 references, table, figure.
