Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formed by the reaction of disinfectants and the polar fraction of natural organic matter (NOM) in drinking may be of concern because of negative health, aesthetic, and industrial consequences. In order to better understand the source of common halogenated DBPs, the NOM from four low humic waters was isolated and fractionated after conventional treatment with or without ozonation. Trends in reactivity of the polar and non-polar fractions were observed. The results of the reactions with chlorine showed that the hydrophilic fractions of polar NOM produced significantly higher yields of haloacetic acids (HAAs), especially dihaloacetic acids, compared to trihalomethanes (THMs) that were counter to the results for non-polar NOM. Haloacetonitrile (HAN) yields were highest for the hydrophilic base fractions of polar NOM. When the disinfectant was changed from chlorine to chloramines, trihalogenated DBP yields were reduced by 90 percent for all fractions. However, reduction in dihaloacetic acids (DXAA) ranged from 84 to only 57 percent and yields of 1,1-dichloropropanone increased for all fractions. Knowledge of the NOM-DBP relationships for the various fractions can be a valuable part in a DBP control strategy. Examples of the application of results to treatment strategies are given. Includes 11 references, tables, figures.
