In an effort to meet the current regulations for Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM), the City of Goldsboro recently implemented residual disinfection with chloramines by adding ammonia at the point of entry to the distribution system. This measure enabled the City to comply with the current Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 0.10 mg/L for the running annual average, which is computed from quarterly TTHMs sampling results. However, the municipality, which serves a population of approximately 45,000, will have to comply with the more stringent limits of the Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproduct (D/DBP) Rule by January 1, 2002. In this project, alternatives were investigated that would help the City comply with the new MCLs for HAA5 and TTHM, while maintaining adequate disinfection as required by the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR) and the new Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR). Includes tables, figures.
