This paper presents interim results of an ongoing research project by Denver Water to develop a new method for disinfecting newly constructed or rehabilitated water mains using ozone before they are placed into service in a water distribution system. The limitations of existing chlorine disinfection practices and the comparative advantages of ozone are discussed. A new flow-through method for ozone disinfection of water mains is described. The disinfection efficiency of this method was evaluated in laboratory and pipe loop field trials, and results are given. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
