This paper discusses the use of mercury in ultraviolet (UV) lamps used in UV disinfection of drinking water. Factors influencing the determination of risk with respect to potential mercury release during UV disinfection system operation are summarized. Results from a manufacturer survey of mercury content in UV lamps and example systems are presented, as well as, examples of documented UV lamp breaks. In addition, the paper also identifies factors that affect the fate of mercury upon release, including mercury speciation and reactions in operating lamps, regulatory concerns, and research gaps. Includes 18 references, tables, figures.
