Although the science of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection for water treatment is being rapidly developed, much of the developing knowledge base is based on "paper studies" and very little information is available from actual operating facilities. Operational issues, requirements, and costs are major aspects to consider in evaluating UV disinfection for any facility. The City of Henderson, Nevada, is currently constructing one of the first UV disinfection facilities in the United States for surface water treatment. As of August 2002, an extendedperiod performance test has been completed at the Henderson UV facility. This performance test generated real operating data for a full-scale facility and addressed the key operating issues associated with the implementation of UV disinfection. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
