To date, information on oocyst occurrence is lacking and no information has been gathered on the infectious nature of oocysts found in sewage samples. This project provides the industry with the analytical techniques necessary to begin to make these measurements. The levels of oocyst removal and inactivation across the wastewater treatment process are assessed and the public health risks, if any, determined. This paper discusses the methods developed for application toward a survey of occurrence, removal, and/or inactivation of oocysts in wastewater plants in the US. While technically a study of wastewater, this information is also critical for the drinking water industry because of the impact of wastewater on source waters and implications for effective watershed management.
