Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection has great promise to be widely applied in municipal drinking water for its ability to inactivate Cryptosporidium and Giardia at low cost and with minimal contact time/footprint. However, there are significant institutional barriers to its implementation. This paper describes opportunities for using UV disinfection to improve water treatment and institutional barriers to its implementation. The opportunities for use include: inactivate Cryptosporidium; increase plant capacity; control disinfection byproducts; provide disinfection redundancy; and, increase available clearwell storage. Cost comparisons are also given. Includes 5 references, figures.
