Electrochemical (EC) oxidation of arsenite has been found to be affected by the concentrations of several inorganic anions such as chloride and carbonate ions naturally present in groundwater. In addition, recent experiments revealed that the oxidation of water to ozone in the EC reactor is also involved in arsenite oxidation. Since the EC oxidation of water is catalyzed by electrode material, arsenite oxidation is strongly affected by the type of electrode material used. This paper discusses the effects of the electrode material, electrolyte, current density and hydraulic residence time on the generation of ozone in EC reactors. Includes 5 references, figures.
