  • Experimental Determination of the Fluence (UV Dose) Required in the UV Photodegradation of NDMA in a Treated Waste Water

Direct ultraviolet (UV) photolysis is often used (especially in California) to degrade N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which is now being found in some treated wastewaters at levels considerably above the control level in California of 20 ng/L. This study investigates the question, "If NDMA is being treated in this manner, what degree of UV disinfection is also achieved?" Experimental methods included: preliminary protocol; fluence (UV dose) - response curve for MS2 in a quasi collimated beam apparatus; NDMA decay and MS2 inactivation in a collimated beam apparatus; and, bench reactor tests. Includes 4 references, figures.
