Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation with either low- or medium- pressure Hg lamps has proven very effective for N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) removal from contaminated waters. Even though NDMA is a strong absorber of the UV light and has a large quantum yield for direct photolysis, the water characteristics play an important role in the treatment. This paper examines the kinetics of NDMA photodegradation in the presence and the absence of H2O2, as a function of water quality parameters, such as pH, total organic carbon, alkalinity, and temperature, under broadband irradiation with a medium pressure lamp. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
