Protection of water quality in the distribution system forms the final barrier in the multi-barrierapproach to providing safe drinking water. The water supply community is beginning to takemore proactive steps towards protecting this barrier. Many countries that have adopted aproactive approach have based their programs on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points(HACCP), a risk management system. The intent of HACCP is to focus system control atcritical points throughout a process, thereby preventing hazards from occurring, or reducinghazards to an acceptable level. A utility's HACCP plan is developed by a multidisciplinary teamto identify and rank specific hazards and determine how they should be controlled. This paperpresents information on the HACCP principles and the on-going AwwaRF Project #2856 that isevaluating HACCP applications to water distribution systems. Includes 3 references, tables, figure.
