In the United Kingdom (UK), approximately three quarters of all water quality failures reported to theregulatory authorities relate to discolored supplies, despite major expenditure on pipe renovation.This paper is based on research that is currently being undertaken for UK Water IndustryResearch Ltd (UKWIR) entitled Managing and Controlling Discoloration Incidents and buildson work previously published in the UKWIR report Hydraulic Characterization of Deposits andReview of Sediment Modelling. The paper reviews the cause of 170 UK discolorationincidents that occurred between 1997 and 2001 and presents a risk assessment method that canbe used to target remedial measures cost-effectively.
