In recent years there have been growing concerns about the occurrence of antibiotics inthe environment due to their potential adverse effect on ecosystem and human health. Methods were developed for the analysis of sulfonamide antibiotics in raw drinkingwaters using solid phase extraction and LC-UV detection. The method of standardaddition was used for quantification. Sulfonamides were tentatively detected in someraw water samples. Meanwhile, LC-MS/MS methods were developed for positiveidentification and quantification of sulfonamides in water. In addition, a chlorinationstudy was performed to assess the removal of a representative sulfonamide and effortswere made to identify the chlorination byproducts. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
