This paper examines an alternative concept for meeting new regulatorychallenges for disinfection byproduct control that uses amagnetized ion exchange (MIEX) process consisting essentially of removing the natural organic matter (NOM) that reacts to form disinfection byproducts.Testing was performed at four locationsaround the country that allowed assessment of process performance under widelydiffering conditions. Evaluations indicated a distinct trend of NOM removal dependingon the nature of the NOM in the source water as determined by specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), molecular weightfractionations, and fractionations to characterize the distribution of hydrophobic, transphilic, and hydrophilic components.
