Aurora, Colorado operates two water treatment facilities that supply potable water for its300,000 customers. In 1999, the 80-mgd Griswold Water Treatment Facility was re-builtand chlorine dioxide replaced chlorine as the primary disinfectant. By replacing chlorine, the concentration of disinfection byproducts was reduced, while maintaining the benefits ofpre-oxidation. In 2002, a needs assessment indicated that a similar strategy should beimplemented at the City's 80-mgd Wemlinger Water Treatment Plant. This paper discusses design and operational considerations for use of chlorine dioxide with chlorine, describes some of the synergistic benefits from the use of both oxidants, and summarizesimprovements in waterquality that have beenachieved at WemlingerWater Treatment Plant. Includes tables, figures, appendix.
