This study was initiated to determine the usefulness of Coli ID agar inrecovering chlorine-stressed E. coli and other coliform organisms from drinkingwater and to compare the results with Tergitol-TTC agar stipulated by EuropeanGuideline 98/83 as a reference method. Moreover, the Colilert-18 /Quanti-Traymedium was used. To that end, the study analyzed marginally chlorinated watersamples by means of the most probable number method using Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray, and the membranefiltration technique using Coli ID and TTC-Tergitol agar, according to ISO 9308-1:2000 method for coliforms and E. coli. Variance analysis of the data obtainedshowed statistically significant differences in the coliform counts "confirmed" onColi ID compared with this of reference method used. The coliform counts onColi ID from marginally chlorinated water samples were significantly greater(P<0.01) than the corresponding values of the Tergitol-TTC agar andsignificantly less (P<0.05) than that of Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray. In this samewater, variance analysis of the data also demonstrated the absence ofstatistically significant differences in the E. coli counts "confirmed" of Coli IDcompared with Tergitol-TTC and Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray. In summary, the ColiID agar could be used as an alternative method to reference method for detectingand recovering E. coli and other coliform bacteria in treated water. However,Colilert-18 /Quanti-Tray was the most suitable for recovering other coliformbacteria chlorine-stressed non E. coli organisms. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
