This paper provides an update on the US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) efforts to evaluate and implement therecommendations for microbial contaminants for the next and future CCLs. They include:defining a set of microorganisms as a universe of potential CCL organisms;identifying methods to screen this universe to a set of waterborne pathogens transmittedin drinking water for further scrutiny (pre-CCL); developing a transparent process to identify which pre-CCL pathogens should be considered for the next or future CCLs; and,evaluation of new analytical methods, and technological advances that maybe considered for future CCLs to identify emerging pathogens.
