This paper presents the results of an ongoing investigation looking at the impact ofrepairs of pipe leaks and breaks on water quality in the distribution systems of twoCanadian cities. The objective was to study the occurrence of microbial intrusion in fullscale distribution systems. To monitor the impact of repairs, samples of soil and waterwere collected at the repair site, at customer houses and at flushed hydrants in thevicinity. Aerobic sporeformers were found to be valuable indicators of intrusion in thedistribution systems investigated. A case study is presented where evidence of intrusionwas obtained as indicator organisms (E. coli, aerobic sporeformers and actinomycetes)were detected in the water flushed from the hydrant after the repair was completed. Includes 13 references, tables, figures.
