SSBV Consultants, Inc., a company owned by Black & Veatch Corporation, Stantec, andAmec, is assisting the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) with the design andconstruction of the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant (SCFP), which will treat raw waterfrom both the Seymour and the Capilano water supplies. The Seymour-CapilanoFiltration Plant will be located near Rice Lake in the Lower Seymour ConservationReserve (LSCR) and will filter up to 1,800 ML/day (475 mgd). Water from Capilanowill be pumped through a 3.7 m diameter tunnel to the filtration plant in the LSCR, whereit will be filtered and disinfected, and then returned to Capilano by gravity through aparallel tunnel of the same size. The twin tunnels will be approximately 7.2 km long and160 ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ 640 m below the surface. UV disinfection will be used for primary disinfection atthe SCFP, with sodium hypochlorite providing secondary disinfection. Design issuesconsidered for this project included the location of the UV reactors, backup power andselection of the preferred UV manufacturer. Includes figures.
