Using the example of the Iraq Rural Water Reconstruction Project, the focus of this paper is to discusscost-effective, sustainable solutions for providing fast track construction of potable waterfacilities in rural areas for a wide variety of countries under development. Designsand available options should be able to address population served, sources, and raw waterquality. Design solutions should also consider additional goals such as maximizing employmentopportunities for local people and ensuring the finished project provides a sustainable solutionthrough long term operations and maintenance.Three raw water sources are available in the Iraq Rural Water Reconstruction Project: surfacewater, alluvial groundwater, and sedimentary rock groundwater. Only the groundwater sourcesare discussed in this paper. The major concerns are safety and security, sites selection, waterquality such as TDS (total dissolved solid), equipment or material availability, technicalfeasibility, construction time, and treated water distribution. Includes tables, figures.
