This study funded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation focused on evaluating the viability ofcapacitive deionization technology (CDT) in water reuse and desalination of methane producedwater generated from natural gas fields. The tested water was characterized as brackishgroundwater of sodium chloride type with TDS concentration of 5,000 mg/L. The water was alsocharacterized by elevated concentrations of iodide around 55 mg/L. Industrial-scale CDT®aquacells (CDT Systems, Inc., Dallas, Texas) were tested at a gas production site in Montana withfocus on fouling/scaling behavior, regeneration effectiveness and desalting efficiency. The effectof operational conditions on the treated water quality, such as applied power, flow rate andstaging was examined. The removal efficiencies of specific constituents of interest wereidentified. The viability of CDT in water reuse and desalination was also assessed with respect oftreatment efficiency, operational condition, and operational costs. Includes 5 references.
