The objective of this study wasto assess the removal capacity of the combination of coagulation and ceramicmembranes in the treatment of higher concentrations of organics as typically found inScandinavian surface waters, with total organic carbon (TOC) values between 5 and 10 mg/l.A pilot plant, using one typical industrial size ceramic membrane element of 1.5 mlength and a diameter of 180 mm with a total surface area of 25 m2, was used to treatsurface water at the Lovo Surface Water Treatment plant in Stockholm, Sweden. Initialchemical dosage was based on jar tests, simulating the full scale ferric chloridedosages of up to 50 mg/l. Coagulant dosage was then optimized by comparingtreatment efficiency between the more classical "two tank method" with the rapid"inline method", and various flux rates were tried to optimize this new application. The removal of turbidity and TOC followed, as well as residual concentrations oftotal and dissolved ferric and manganese. The increase of trans-membrane pressure(TMP) was monitored on-line, and its recovery was analyzed depending on variousmethods of chemical cleaning. Detailed results of the various pilot runs are given, including some economical analysis in comparison with the conventional treatmentplant consisting of flocculation, settling, rapid and slow process (Abrahamsson andDromberg, 2006). Includes 4 references, figures.
