This slide presentation outlines a study on the characterization of manganese oxide coated filter media from nine water treatment plants. The scope of the presentation includes: oxide coating (mg metal/gram of media);size and uniformity (sieve analysis);specific surface area (m<sup>2</sup> per/gram of media); and, Mn uptake capacity. Conclusions were:Metal Coatings - >0.01 to 120 mg Mn per gram of media,present on sand and anthracite media,significant variation,comprised of Fe, Al and Ca,consistent ratios; and, Metal Coatings - Mn Uptake increases with Mn coating,"diminishing returns",rough, porous nature,high surface area,inaccessible adsorption sites,encapsulated particles,Mn uptake as-is = 70% of regenerated.
