This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the St. Charles (Illinois) water system and its problem with radium in Well #8. Compliance options are presented and include: blend Well #8 with other city wells, but was determinednot feasible due to high radium concentration; treatment options considered for Radium removal wereIon Exchange andHydrous Manganese Oxides (HMO). The selected treatment involved: split treatment system selectedion exchange in parallel with HMO treatment;meet MCL for Radium;reduce hardness to desirable levels;two simple processes with flow split adjustability;ion exchange system sized to meet Radium MCL; ion exchange did not require piloting; and, HMO required a pilot study for State approval. The study concluded that: HMO and Ion Exchange are both effective for radiumremoval; consultant worked closely with end user to develop asolution that would meet their needs;common treatment methods easily modified andconfigured to solve non-traditional challenges; and, partial softening has resulted in numerous positivecomments from customers.
