Diffused aeration was investigated for the removal of trihalomethanes (THMs) in pilot and field studies. The pilot results indicate a chloroform removal of 99% in 6 hours of aeration in a 200-gallon tank. Field studies, done in a 70,000 gallon storage tank, indicate chloroformremovals of 18%-35% in 5 hours depending on the air-to-water ratio and the conditionsof the tank. Mathematical modeling was also developed to determine air-to-water ratiosfor different size tanks and different removal times. No haloacetic acid (HAA) or chlorine residualremoval was observed throughout the pilot and field studies. Includes 5 references, figures.
