This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of surface complexation modeling (SCM), defined as "a thermodynamically based approach fordescribing adsorption in which solutesinteract with functional groups on thesurface either through ion pairassociation or solute-functional groupcomplexation". Overall research goals were to develop a methodology for:refining and calibrating models for metal ionadsorption, using a fixed SSD obtainedfrom tritium exchange experiments; and, show that this methodology can be usedto model single solute adsorption as wellas adsorption in competitive systems. The modeling procedure is presented along with results that include: SCMs appear to be adequate for describingsingle solute and bisolute sorption over a rangeof experimental conditions;fixing the surface site density value at 16.4sites/nm2 for goethite allowed to morereadily identify parameters that could fit singleand bi-solute data; and, spectroscopy information is extremelyimportant for selecting appropriate surfacecomplexation reactions. Includes tables, figures.
