The objective of this powerpoint presentation was optimization of biofiltration with respect toremoval of taste and odor (T&O) compounds in orderto understand the contribution ofbiodegradation and adsorption under realisticoperational conditions. The approach involved: comparing adsorbing media granular activated carbon(GAC) withnonadsorbing media (expanded clay, EC);Two Phases:biomass concentration - constant over bed depth / low temperature andvarying with depth / high temperature; and, suppress microbial activity. Summary and conclusions were that: bench-scale experiments on biodegradation /adsorption removal of MIB and geosmin werecarried out in bench scale columns;from the first set of experiments a simple modeldescriminating between adsorption andbiodegradation was developed; and,the model was verified by an independentexperiment at different temperature and differentbiomass concentration. Includes figures.
