This powerpoint presentation presents the problem statement as: cleaned polymer membranes are considered suitable forcontinued use;however, some reports on hypochlorite treatment indicatedegradation of membranes (Wolff and Zydney 2004; Rouaix etal., 2005; Gaudichet-Maurin and Thominette 2006); and,it may lead to penetration of pathogens into the filtrate. Membrane characterizationmethods included:X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy;ATR-FTIR spectroscopy;streaming potential;permeability measurements; and, tensile strength at break. Conclusions were that: the increased electronegativity and PVP dislodgingwas related to enlargement of membrane pores;FTIR spectroscopy findings suggest chain scission ofethersulfone;the deterioration of the mechanical strength of treatedmembranes indicates a loss of membrane integrity; and,the cleaning process substantially affects theperformance and surface properties of the PESmembrane.
