Anion exchange has been shown to be an effective process for the removal of naturalorganic material (NOM) from raw drinking water. In contrast to conventional bed-typeion exchange process configurations which follow solid-liquid separation processes, themagnetic ion exchange (MIEX) process, in which the anion exchange resin isimpregnated with magnetic iron oxide, can be used as a pretreatment option to removeNOM prior to subsequent coagulation, oxidation, and disinfection. When used in thismanner, coagulant, oxidant, and disinfectant doses are greatly reduced, as is theformation of subsequent disinfection byproducts. Many batch and continuous-flow pilotplant studies have been performed on a variety of raw waters to determine the requisiteresin doses for effective NOM removal. The objectives of this paper were to examine theresults of those studies, compare the results of batch, pilot-scale and full-scale tests, andto integrate the findings into a composite picture describing the performance of the MIEXprocess.
