The ultraviolet (UV) advanced oxidation process (AOP) represents an emerging technology for water treatment and water reuse.Understanding project experience and lessons learned from early projects is critical intaking UV AOP from an emerging technology to a robust, proven process ready forimplementation. This paper summarizes key issues from the following three projects implementing UVAOP across the world:Aurora (Colorado) Reservoir Water Purification Facility (ARWPF);Oxnard (California) GREAT Program Advanced Water Treatment Facility (AWTF); and,Luggage Point Advanced Water Treatment Plant (LPAWTP) in Brisbane,Queensland, Australia. These three projects, ranging in capacity from 6.25 mgd (Oxnard) to 50 mgd (Aurora), representthree of the first UV AOP projects for municipal treatment applications. From the experience ofthe project teams completing the research, design, and startup of these facilities, key issues forconsideration for the implementation of an effective UV AOP project are presented in this paper.Oxnard's AWTF and Australia's LPAWTP represent water reuse projects, with secondary effluenttreated through membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, and UV AOP prior to recharge of thegroundwater aquifer or introduction to a water supply reservoir. Detailed design is underway forOxnard, and construction is underway for the LPAWTP. The LPAWTP facility is scheduled forstart-up later in 2008. An overview of each project is provided.Aurora's ARWPF is a drinking water treatment facility, and UV AOP is part of a multiple barrierprocess to provide high quality drinking water from a river source. Construction is underway, with start-up scheduled for 2010. Includes 4 references, table, figures.
