This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of several large taste and odor (T&O) events at a water treatment plant (WTP) which prompted the utility toconsider installing T&O reduction treatment. An Ultraviolet (UV) Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) was selected, and specific objectives forbench-scale testing included the following: evaluate UV AOP effectiveness for MIB oxidation onfiltered water; evaluate two water quality conditions in thewater collected at the tail end of the lake turnover (Decembersample);water collected after the lake turnover (February sample);determine if finished waterMIB level goal of 5 ng/L can beachieved; and, determine if AOC levels significantlychange as a result of UV AOPs. Conclusions from bench-scale UV AOP testing included the following:UV AOP showed over a 5 log reductionin MIB;water quality parameterswere not impacted; AOC had a small increasefrom UV AOPs;UV AOPs can belocated downstream offiltration; and, quenching of peroxide residualis necessary. A Cost comparison was completed based on bench-scale testing for treatmenttechnologies. Presentation summary and conclusions indicate the following: UV AOPs can provide high levels of MIBreduction (>5 log); AOC creation was reasonable and allowedfor UV reactors to be placed downstreamof existing filters;AOC creation is water quality specific;UV AOP was cost competitive with ozoneand GAC; and, theproject is moving forward with design ofUV AOP facility.
