In fixed-bed (FXB) biological processes (including biologically active filtrationsystems), biofilms develop on a stationary bed of media, such as sand, anthracite, orgranular activated carbon. As the microbial community oxidizes and reduces dissolvedconstituents, stationary gradients of redox potential develop across the depth of the bedand across a given biofilm. These redox gradients make FXB bioreactorsparticularly suitable for destroying a wide variety of contaminants, often within a singlebioreactor. This paper lists the breadth of contaminants that can be removed through theFXB bioreactor process and describes two related case studies. Includes 24 references, figure.
