This study examined the effects of changing pH and copperconcentrations on the absorbance spectra of a standard fulvic acid.Differential absorbance spectra calculated for a Suwannee River fulvicacid sample revealed features which were absent in the raw absorbancespectra. These features could be attributed to the activities of distincttypes of chromophores in both proton and copper binding. A correlationbetween the spectra of chromophores active in copper binding and thoseactive in proton binding for the same pH regions further highlighted theability of differential absorbance spectroscopy to effectively characterizethe binding properties of this fulvic acid at the low copper and dissolvedorganic carbon concentrations relevant in many environmental systems.
