The objective of this research was tocharacterize the growth response of Mycobacterium avium ssp. avium (MAA), under controlled conditions, exposed to varioussubstrates and typical drinking water constituents, and to describe environmental conditions thatmay either support growth or induce inhibition of MAA if such conditions were present in aDWDS.The research team conducted a series of pure culture experiments to quantify growth response ofMAA (ATCC 35712) exposed to various substrates and inorganic constituents that may bepresent in DWDSs. Characterization of growth response was based on comparative analysis of time to detection(TTD), between simulated condition and control condition, using the automated liquid culturemycobacteria growth indicator tube method (MGIT). Control condition consisted of a knownenvironment that supported growth of MAA. Simulated condition included individuallyincreasing and decreasing individual media component concentration of control condition by oneorder of magnitude, or removing component all together.
