This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Stage 2 DBP Rule Compliance, focusing on activated carbon, and granular activated carbon (GAC) filter adsorbers. A brief utility profile is presented of the Mohawk Valley Water Authority, along with potential GAC implementationstrategies and preliminary filter performance and costs estimates. GAC Filter Adsorber Evaluations includedbench tests usingRSSCT to confirm viability of yearlychangeout, andpilot tests to:confirm TOC and turbidity removalperformance of mono- and dual-media filteradsorbers;gather additional SDS data (to better defineTOC target);determine the TOC removal impact(s) ofbiological activity; and, gain New York State Department of Health approval for implementingGACfilter adsorbers at the Hinckley Plant. Presentation summary includes the following: under the right circumstances, GAC filter adsorbers can bean effective Stage 2 compliance strategy;much less expensive than post-filter contactors;avoid potential unintended consequences w/chloramines; MVWA Strategy - enhanced TOC removal for limited period;limited biological removal;mono-media vs. dual-media;backwashing of initial fines into lagoons; and, volatility of GAC market. Includes tables, figures.
