This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Houston's surface water treatmentprocesses and treatment goals. Problems encountered with finished watermanganese levels after enhanced coagulation are presented, along with aninvestigation into possible causes, raw water characteristics, andmanganese through treatment process. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: investigation into Mn problems in finished waterrevealed a combination of contributing factors;treatment technique for enhanced coagulation; sediments at single depth plant intake and lake variability;management of return flows; solution was pH control both at source and intreatment plant;source control is being accomplished by laminar circulation -increases DO levels at sediments, prevents lake turn oversand increases pH;treatment plant control is by utilization of caustic to raisepH prior to filtration and in return flows; and, potassium permanganate oxidation added for use as needed.
