This paper presents a new, simple, fast, sensitive, and reliable reversed-phase LC/ESI/MSmethod for direct analysis of all nine chlorinated and brominated HAAs and several iodinatedHAAs. The HAAs can be well separated and detected by the optimized reversed-phaseLC/ESI/MS that has been widely used in water quality testing laboratories. In addition, theESI/MS detection allows the use of isotopically labeled analogs as internal standards, which willprovide ultimate compensation for matrix interferences and instrument variations in analyzingHAAs. The method sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and matrix interferences are presented. This highly sensitive and specific method is expected to overcome the four main problemsassociated with Methods 552.2 and 552.3, and to be able to simultaneously analyze all HAAs inraw and finished drinking waters. The results will be very significant for simultaneouslyinvestigating the formation and degradation of all HAAs in drinking water treatment anddistribution systems. Includes abstract only.
