This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of lead service lines (LSL) as a major source of lead (Pb) and the difficulty of establishing the presence of LSL. A study by the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is presented, where in 2006 a high density of LSL was observed in somesectors of the city (i.e. wartime houses) located on both public and private sides. A significant number are isolated cases that necessitate a systematic screening in order to find thepresence of LSL (public or private). Study objectives were to: validate the lead concentrationfound by Palintest by comparison with ICP-MS results; develop a specific technique using lead concentration measurements at the tap as a tool to detect LSL-based on-site measurement; and, assess the extent of this technique and investigate the risk of false negative and false positive associated. Criteria for an ideal sampling protocol is presented, along with stagnation types and selection of stagnation time. The Borough of St Laurent, where high numbers of LSL were detected, was chosen as the pilot borough for the replacement program to test various replacement techniques. Sampling procedures for the Lead Service Line Detection Protocol (LSLDP) are provided, along with the range of lead concentrations associated with categories. Includes figures.
